Welcome to the department of Sociology!

Sociology is the scientific study of human society. Sociologists attempt to reach a deeper understanding of people and their social environment. They are "intensively, endlessly, shamelessly interested" in the doings of people (Berger, 1963, 18). Sociologists offer a special angle of vision and try not to rely on traditional, causal, or commonsense explanations about our daily lives. Sociologists invite you to step back, observe, think critically and develop a fresh approach to understanding every day life.

Teaching Goal and Objectives:

Our primary goal is to systematically develop a strong working knowledge of the theory, concepts, methodology, publications, and practices in the field of sociology.

By the end of their program, students should be able to:

  • state how the sociological perspective is unique from other disciplinary perspectives but also how it intersects with other disciplines,

  • demonstrate familiarity with the relationship between historical context and the development of society and culture,

  • demonstrate a rigorously critical thinking capacity by being able to critique the major theoretical and methodological issues in the field of sociology,

  • conduct effective library research through their familiarity with the scholarly reference materials for sociological research,

  • write a well-structured, critical research paper that follows standard academic guidelines, including  citation guidelines,

  • be conversant in social issues by being able to identify,, discuss and debate different positions on an issue,

  • carry out a professional, effective presentation on a sociological topic,

  • distinguish between various qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches,

  • conduct research on a specific topic by using primary and secondary data,

  • demonstrate a concern for social issues and sense of social responsibility
